Robert Pomper

I have been a member of The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus since 1983. My reason for joining was to find my identity, an identity that was contrary to what I was taught as a young person. Then, sexuality was not spoken of and “don’t ask , don’t tell” was how I was expected to deal with my feelings, an educational philosophy.

Everyone in this life has a purpose in life, but I did not know what my purpose was because of not being able to ask questions about the feelings I had. I had to find the answers in my own way and in my own time.

Becoming a member of PGMC was a new beginning for me, first as a person and second as a gay man in a society that did not acknowledge or accept a person because of their sexual orientation. Becoming a member of a group of fine men that accept themselves for who they are, for what they stand for, and how they express themselves through music helped me become a better person, knowing I was loved and helping me love myself.

It has been a great experience for me and the ride is not over yet . This group of men has been an important part of my life and has been and will always be part of my family. Some are still here, some are not, but they all will always have a special place in my heart for years to come.

Love is the most important element in this world of ours, and the love I have received through my membership with Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus is not a glass half full or half empty, but a glass that is full with love and concern for all mankind, no matter who or what they are or have become. Over the years, this organization has given me a purpose in life. Hopefully it will become a beacon of light for those who come after us.

I have been HIV-positive for over 20 years, and PGMC gives me something to look forward to and something to live for, for I am still alive thanks to this group of fine men. Thank you, guys, for this great adventure, and thank you who give great support to this organization.
